Bob and I were hiking by 7:30. We wanted to complete the 700 foot climb out of camp before it got too warm. The climb was not too difficult. Met an Indian (Asian) thru hiker who had lost a bunch of weight and was glad to meet with family in Baltimore for some good Indian food Over to Gathland State Park where there is a large Civil War Correspondents Monument. That was our lunch stop with a spigot for water. Several hikers stopped for water including one unusual character. Lots of Civil War info about the Maryland campaign.
It was less than four miles to tonight’s campsite. About thirty minutes before we arrived at the shelter there was thunder in the distance. A hiker, 80s Night, was packing up. He was from Texas and starting a flip flop hike. Bob and I made a run for the spring, seeing bf a couple deer. It immediately began to rain and then downpoured with thunder and lightning. Since our packs were dry in the shelter, the decision was to stay in the shelter instead of setting up tents in the mud. After the rain stopped the sun came out and the birds started chirping. The temperature has dropped about fifteen degrees and it is comfortable. We spent some time in the sun drying out.
There are about fifteen MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) in the bear box. Bob decided to take one home to try. No one else here by six so we inflated our sleep pads and staked out our territory. There is a loft in the shelter with a ladder entrance in back.
My disintegrating shoe looks like it will make it to Harpers Ferry tomorrow. I will see if I can get n new shoes at the outfitter or use my sneakers from in the truck. We are looking forward to a meal and hotel room before continuing on Monday.
I think all photos are uploaded. You need to go to each day to view.
