Bob and I were up early and after packing headed to Harpers Ferry to find breakfast. Nothing was open, either closed until Wednesday or opened late. Back to the hotel to make arrangments for the room on Saturday and to leave the truck. Breakfast was at a little diner on the way to Pen Mar Park. A stop at Sheetz for a sub for my lunch and dinner and we were set.
Bob and I arrived at Pen Mar Park around ten. A little rearranging of gear and pictures at the AT sign. our first thru hiker took our pics. He started in January from Georgia. Later on we met a mom and daughter from Tennessee who started from Harpers Ferry and were headed to Maine. From Maine they would come back to Harpers Ferry and hike south to Georgia to complete the AT.
The trail guide noted a view at High Rock just off trail. That sounded like a good stop for lunch. What a disaster! It was an incredibly beautiful view with parking nearby. The place was covered in graffiti and full of trash. While we were there a family with a young child was spray painting a tree. Two guys were driving remote control trucks and filming them. The place was pretty busy. Bob and I finished our lunch and got out of there.
After passing a woman older than us who was solo hiking, backpacking and slack packing we arrived at Raven Rock Shelter. The shelter is a nice double decker but we are tenting. Bob made the half mile trek for water while I did this update. A woman came by looking for a spot for two tarps. She is from Outdoor Bound. Two counselors and seven students.
After Bob and I finished dinner, the second half of our subs, Mandy set up her tent not too far away. she came over to the picnic table to make her dinner. We chatted for a while. She has recently left FEMA and her husband is a bugler for the army. We mayb be sharing a campsite tomorrow.
Lots of birds and chipmunks today. Bob saw a deer on the way to the spring.
