The temperature cooled to 53 overnight which made for comfortable sleeping. Although Bob and I were up early we had breakfast with coffee and relaxed since we planned a short day. We were the last hikers to leave the shelter at 8:30.
Bob and I no sooner left the shelter before seeing a doe with a spotted fawn by the stream. After watching them cross the water it was a 300 foot descent. Usually we start uphill but the descent was followed by a 500 foot ascent. In about four miles we arrived at St. Johns Ledges for a 500 foot descent where the guide says “steep stone steps down to Housatonic River”. Where there were steps they were steep. In other places we lowered ourselves by clinging to boulders and trees. The reward for the death defying climb down was a flat two and a half mile walk along the river to our tentsite near the shelter.
Things started quiet here, a hiker in the shelter and one that just stopped by for a break but it filled up quick. The four campsites each have room for three or four tents and each site is occupied. You can tell it is the weekend.
Today was our last full day of hiking. Tomorrow is a five mile walk to a motel where we can shower and do laundry before getting picked up on Sunday. Looking forward to a hot shower and clean clothes. There also may be a deli involved.

I’m wondering if it takes a day or so to adjust to life off the trail. Hope there are some pics of the boulders you had to climb. Kudos to you both on your AT mileage!
