2026 Appalachian Trail – Day 7 – Short Day

Tuesday – 2 June

Destination: William Douglas Shelter (1,652.8)
Start Location: Bromley Shelter (1,660.5)
Today’s Miles: 7.7
Trip Miles: 57.8

Last night three more hikers came in around seven. Belle and Raven are two ladies hikng the Long Trail. Other hiker was doing a section of the AT. Gumby was out before anyone else was up. I got a seven o’clock start.

Lots of day hikers and long distance hikers heading north. Crossing a busy three lane road was not a lot of fun. The Vermont men’s ski club passed me running up the trail. A while later I saw them on their return.

Today was a shorter hike day with tomorrow being my longest day but into a hostel for a zero day. Today’s shelter area is a half mile off trail adding to tomorrow but the side trail is pretty flat. Since the next camping area is five miles, it was either a long day today or tomorrow. The long day followed up with the hostel seemed like a better idea.

Looks like I may be alone again tonight. Two tries to get my bear line up tonight.

Vermont lives up to its hiker nickname of Vermud. I’ve decided the state is made of rocks and mud, very little dry dirt. You take a step that looks solid, hear squoosh, pull your foot out and hope you don’t feel a wet foot.

No cell service tonight so this goes out tomorrow. I will be able to upload photos as well. Should have time to edit and correct earlier posts.
