2026 Appalachian Trail – Day 2 – Cool and Cloudy

Thursday – 28 May

TextDestination: Governor Clement Shelter (1,698.1)
Start Location: Churchill Scott Shelter  (1706.9)
Today’s Miles: 8.8
Trip Miles: 12.5

No one else came into the shelter area last night, so I was there alone. Temperature cooled off to forty-eight degrees, was wonderful sleeping. Sunrise is at 5:15, this far North. I was hiking before seven. The day started with a 700-foot climb over the first mile, a great way to warm up.

I started the day at 2600 feet elevation and climbed over Killington Peak at  over 4,000 feet elevation. I ended the day at about 1900 feet in elevation. Tomorrow I never go above 2000. It should be a nice, easier day.

I met a section-hiker trail named State Line. He is from Maryland, not far from where I live. He has been doing his section hikes state by state, hence the trail name. Next up was Shadow, a thru-hiker who started Georgia in the middle of February. He had rave reviews about the Wicked Waystation hostel. That was good news because I’ll be staying there next Wednesday and Thursday night. Also saw two day hikers, one with a dog, and one other hiker.

The shelter here is a big. old stone shelter with the fireplace. I’m camped right next to the stream near the shelter. There’s a bear box here tonight to store my food. That means I still have a perfect record throwing my bear line over the tree limb.

No one at the shelter tonight or tenting, Maybe another night alone.

It has been much cooler today, tonight will be chilly. No internet so this won’t be able to go out tonight.
